Howard T. Herber Middle School starts our World Language Program with Introduction to World Languages in 6th grade. A second successful year in Spanish (grades 7-8) represents ONE high School credit and admittance into LEVEL 2 of World Languages at Malverne Senior High School.
406 SPANISH 1R 1 year – 1 credit
Prerequisite: None Grades 9 –12
Spanish 1R offers the first year level student ample opportunity for active participation in learning the foreign language through interactive exercises and guided practice. This objective is attained by studying the language in its cultural and real-life context. The four modalities of learning are employed-daily-listening and speaking skills, reading comprehension and writing practice. Basic communication in the foreign language is the expected outcome of this course.
407 SPANISH 2R 1 year – 1 credit
Prerequisite: Spanish 1R or Spanish 7th/8th Grades 9 –12
A follow-up for the first-year course in which the skills of comprehension, speaking and reading are advanced. Writing is introduced with elementary composition and dialogue formation. Essentials of grammar are taught and frequently given as homework. Students are encouraged to use the foreign language for communication in class as much as possible, as the teacher uses it more and more. The presentation of Spanish/Italian culture continues, especially with respect to daily life events.
408 SPANISH 3R 1 year – 1 credit
Prerequisite: Spanish 2R, Italian 2R Grades 10 –12
Requirement: Regents Comprehensive Exam
In this course all four basic skills are stressed and refined. There is a combination of grammar, writing, speaking and reading comprehension skills that will be addressed. Emphasis is placed upon mastering a broad range of vocabulary words that reflect current social trends, technological advances and common, everyday vocabulary that facilitates communication with the community, as well as the business world.
409 SPANISH 4/COLLEGE LEVEL I** 1 year – 1.07 credit
Prerequisite: Spanish 3R and/or by Teacher Recommendation Grades 11-12
Culture is studied by century and by theme, as the students are taught to appreciate literature, art, music and history. The ability to communicate in the foreign language is extended, and critical thinking is developed. Individual research is strongly encouraged. *This course qualifies you for the Seal of Biliteracy and is a dual credit course.
410 SPANISH AP LANGUAGE & CULTURE/COLLEGE LEVEL I** 1 year – 1.1 credit
