Study a world language at Malverne Senior High School and you will experience our diverse cross-cultural community. Enjoy a comedy or drama. Experience authentic global cuisine. You can earn up to 12 college credits from Molloy College in the Advanced Language programs while studying world history, art, music and literature. Upon successful completion, college-bound graduates with college credits, will also have the opportunity to graduate with a second diploma seal for biliteracy in world languages.
Courses in World Languages will help prepare students for careers in every field in our global society. Employers in business, technology, sales and the service industries actively recruit bilingual candidates.
Howard T. Herber Middle School starts our World Language Program with Introduction to World Languages in 6th grade. A second successful year in Italian (grades 7-8) represents ONE high School credit and admittance into LEVEL 2 of World Languages at Malverne Senior High School.
412 ITALIAN 2R 1 year – 1 credit
Prerequisite: Italian 7th/8th Grades 9 –12
A follow-up for the first-year course in which the skills of comprehension, speaking and reading are advanced. Writing is introduced with elementary composition and dialogue formation. Essentials of grammar are taught and frequently given as homework. Students are encouraged to use the foreign language for communication in class as much as possible, as the teacher uses it more and more. The presentation of Spanish/Italian culture continues, especially with respect to daily life events.
413 ITALIAN 3R 1 year – 1 credit
Prerequisite: Italian 2R Grades 10 –12
Requirement: Regents Comprehensive Exam
In this course all four basic skills are stressed and refined. There is a combination of grammar, writing, speaking and reading comprehension skills that will be addressed. Emphasis is placed upon mastering a broad range of vocabulary words that reflect current social trends, technological advances and common, everyday vocabulary that facilitates communication with the community, as well as the business world.
414 ITALIAN 4/COLLEGE LEVEL I * 1 year – 1.07 credit
Prerequisite: Italian 3R and/or by Teacher Recommendation Grade 11-12
This course deals with Italian history as well as the development of its rich culture. Students maintain a journal in Italian and participate in intellectual discussion of the many social aspects of modern day Italy. *This course qualifies you for the Seal of Biliteracy and is a dual credit course.
415 ITALIAN 5/COLLEGE LEVEL II * 1 year – 1.1 credit
Prerequisite: Italian 4R Grade 12
This course is a combination of Italian 4 and The College Board AP Italian Language and Culture Advanced Placement Program. Both are part of the two-year program of college level courses. It will be language based, focusing on linguistic and grammatical skills learned through readings and literature. This course also focuses on current events through the use of magazines and newspaper articles. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement examination in May.
**Students taking this course have the option to register with Molloy College. They will be able to earn up to twelve college credits above the one high school credit per year. Many United States colleges and universities recognize Molloy College credits. *This course qualifies you for the Seal of Biliteracy and is a dual credit course.
