BUSINESS EDUCATION
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has found that students who have the opportunity for exposure to all aspects of life while in high school are better prepared to achieve success in the workplace and in life. The following courses are designed to prepare students for our multicultural, global society, both in the United States and beyond. All courses will use technology, especially the computer, to enhance and broaden the students’ learning experiences.
(All Internet based courses require that students have a signed Internet Agreement on file. Failure to submit agreement nullifies student’s enrollment in a particular course.)
NEW Course: Virtual Enterprises
Prerequisites: Grades 11/12 & successful completion of Algebra 2 & FLACS B exams
Credit: 1.0 Time: Full Year
Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a student directed competition-based business simulation where students create and run every aspect of a business and compete in over 20 regional, national, and global competitions throughout the year culminating in a business plan competition where students are judged by industry experts. Students develop their firm and are involved in all aspects of human resources, accounting, marketing, product development, production, distribution, marketing and sales, web design, IT and social media. Students engage in trade shows both online and in-person and online with other firms from around the region. The goal is to create a learning environment that integrates school and the workplace to enhance learning. Students attend 2-3 field trips to promote their firm’s Business Plan and participate in trade shows both on Long Island and New York City! Students receive credits through Farmingdale State College, totaling 6 credits (3 each semester). Dual Enrollment course weight: 1.05
501 CAREER MANAGEMENT 1/2 year – 1/2 credit
Grades 10 – 12
This course is designed to prepare students for the world of work, focusing on the interview process, participating in mock interviews, searching for employment, learning business etiquette and ethics, as well as workplace conduct. Students will also explore a chosen career and evaluate their suitability for that career based upon an investigation of their own goals, interests and abilities. This course will aid in creating necessary tools to succeed in any business endeavor including resume building, interviewing skills as well as public speaking and develop skills and competencies that will help all students succeed in college and in their careers. Dual Enrollment course weight: 1.05

502 FINANCE MANAGEMENT 1/2 year – 1/2 credit
Grades 10-12
The course is designed to teach students how to manage their monetary and personal resources, while building life skills and financial literacy. Students will explore ways to maximize earning potential and manage their money, including pay, benefits, taxes and banking. Students will gain insight into investing money, including stocks, bonds, and retirement planning. Dual Enrollment course weight: 1.05

505 COMPUTER MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS 1/2 year – 1/2 credit
Grades 9 – 12
Recommended for: Students who want to learn multimedia applications. This class is a full-year course designed to teach students to use multimedia programs such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Adobe InDesign applications.
507 ACCOUNTING/COLLEGE PREP (Full Year 1- Credit) 1 year – 1 credit
Grades 10 – 12
This course gives the student an understanding of the fundamental accounting principles involved in the double-entry system. The concepts and principles are covered through an understanding of the following topics: accounting as an information system; analyzing a transaction; the accounting cycle; accounting for both service enterprises and merchandising businesses; deferrals and accruals; reversing entries; systems design; accounting for cash, receivables, temporary investments and inventory; payroll accounting. Students apply concepts to the preparation of special journals, subsidiary ledgers, worksheets and financial statements. Dual Enrollment course weight: 1.05

508 SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING 1 year – 1 credit
Grades 10 – 12
Students will learn the basic marketing functions with emphasis on the sports industry, restaurant, and the entertainment industry, including music. Merchandising and marketing will be the primary focus with the student receiving instruction about the world of promotional marketing. For all topics discussed, students will utilize a variety of resources including case analysis and studies of successful businesses, computer applications, internet sites, research projects, current events, and videos.
510 BUSINESS SKILLS OF THE 21ST CENTURY 1/2 year – 1/2 credit
Grade 9
This course is designed to teach computer and communications skills (Public Speaking). Students will use applications to learn how to format, reports, memos, budgets, graphs, charts, and prepare presentations. Students will be using both Microsoft Office as well as iPad apps. Students will learn how to integrate their knowledge and resources from other academic subject areas. The course is an avenue that students can use to enhance their presentation and communications skills needed for college and the world of work.
516 ADVANCED COMPUTER/WEB DESIGN (ALTERNATE DAY) 1/2 year – 1/2 credit
Grades 10 – 12
This is a course for future developers and designers on creating successful Web sites. Students will learn how to design a Web page using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), JavaScript, and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Topics covered will include planning, analysis, designing and developing well-organized web sites that combine effective navigation with the use of graphics, text and color.
